What is Submarine Power Cable ?

Submarine Power Cables are those cables which are used to laid down under water and carrying current. These cables are generally laid under sea or oceans that means salt water thats why called as submarine. Calling submarine doesn't mean that these wire cable can't be used under fresh water. These wire are also used for transmiting power under fresh water like lakes and rivers.

These cables used for connecting power supplies from mainland to islands. Many uropian countries are using these type of power cables. These cable use to carry electric power benith sea or ocean water.

Technologies Used in Submarine Power Cables

Normally power cable carry AC (Alternative current ) which mainly suffer from two type of loss. One is reactive loss and Other is resistive loss. Reactive loss os due to natural capicitance and inductive properties of wire. DC transmission wires only sufer resistive losses.
AC current means more current and less voltage (Just for seek of understanding). As current increases, power consuption by wires will also increase. As power consummed is I*I*R where I is current and R is resistance. So this conclude that if we use AC transmission than we will need more expensive wires and insulators in other way we will need chip equipments like transformers because voltage diffrence is less.

But when distance increases use of costly wire and towers are not a wise choice just to transmit AC currents. In other hand if we use DC current with High Voltage diffrence it will be more economical. For lesser distance the AC current is good and one can use expensive wires but for lare distance cost of wire starts to increase the totall cost of power transmission. This makes high-voltage direct current (HVDC) better option.

The line losses due to capacitance is greater so reactive loss increase. If we use AC than it will be not benificiary. Hence for underwater transmission system HVDC is used for shorter distances as compare to it used in land as it is economically more advantageous.

High Voltage direct current (HVDC) uses high voltage direct current for electric power transmissions. For underwater current transmission HVDC is less expensive even for shorter distance. HVDC prevent the power loss while underwater cable charges and discharges its capicitance each cycle.

Type of Submarine Power Cable

There are mainly two type of submarine power cable on basis of power transmission.

Alternative Current Cable and Direct Current Cable

Alternative Current Cable (AC)

Submarine power cable are those which carry AC power and transmit it from one source to another source laid under water. This type of cable is used when distance between source and destinationis less.

Direct Current Cable

Submarine Power Cable which carry direct current between its source and destination. These type of cable is used when distance betwen source and destination is much larger. A HVDC is used to transmit power between two station where submarine
