Top 5 Longest Submarine Cables and their Maps

Submarine Cable are all over world. Here we are basically talking about first kind of submarine cable i.e. Submarine Communication Cable. These cable are main source of internet data transfer which laid under sea or ocean water. These cable helps to transfer data from one point of land which are normally continents or countries to other point of land. Huge numbers of submarine cable are laid between America and Europe continent. Length of Submarine cable are from highest 39000 KM to  1 KM . Here is the list of top 5 Submarine Communications Cable which carry internet and private data and laid under salt water.

Top 5 Longest Submarine Cable

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)

For bulk transmission of electrical power between two station a high voltage direct current is used refer as high - voltage , direct current (HVDC). This type of power transmission system is more efficient and cost effective as compare to AC transmission systems for long distance transmissions.

For underwater cables or also called submarine cable this type of transmission system is very much helpfull to reduce the overall cost and power loss between transmission. As wire under water consume too much power while charging and recharging its capicitance per cycle.

For long distance current transmission HVDC is always cost effective and benificial than AC current system. However for short distances again HVDC is more usefull over AC by various other advantage factors of direct current (DC).

For AC unsynchronised systems HVDC allowed very efficient power transmission when power flow can be controlled without affecting the phase angle between source and destinace load. Even in case of rapid change HVDC can stablized immidiatly. HVDC can also transfer power between two power grids where there is diffrenct in power frequncies.

Examples of HVDC

In 1930s between sweden and Germany
in 1951 between Moscow and Kashira
During 1954 a 20 MW system between Gotland and Sweden
Between Xiangjiaba and shanghao ( 2nd largest largest 2071 Km)

Rio Madeira in brazil (largest 2,375 KM)

What is Submarine Power Cable ?

Submarine Power Cables are those cables which are used to laid down under water and carrying current. These cables are generally laid under sea or oceans that means salt water thats why called as submarine. Calling submarine doesn't mean that these wire cable can't be used under fresh water. These wire are also used for transmiting power under fresh water like lakes and rivers.

These cables used for connecting power supplies from mainland to islands. Many uropian countries are using these type of power cables. These cable use to carry electric power benith sea or ocean water.

Cross Section of Submarine Power Cable

Technologies Used in Submarine Power Cables

Normally power cable carry AC (Alternative current ) which mainly suffer from two type of loss. One is reactive loss and Other is resistive loss. Reactive loss os due to natural capicitance and inductive properties of wire. DC transmission wires only sufer resistive losses.
AC current means more current and less voltage (Just for seek of understanding). As current increases, power consuption by wires will also increase. As power consummed is I*I*R where I is current and R is resistance. So this conclude that if we use AC transmission than we will need more expensive wires and insulators in other way we will need chip equipments like transformers because voltage diffrence is less.

But when distance increases use of costly wire and towers are not a wise choice just to transmit AC currents. In other hand if we use DC current with High Voltage diffrence it will be more economical. For lesser distance the AC current is good and one can use expensive wires but for lare distance cost of wire starts to increase the totall cost of power transmission. This makes high-voltage direct current (HVDC) better option.

The line losses due to capacitance is greater so reactive loss increase. If we use AC than it will be not benificiary. Hence for underwater transmission system HVDC is used for shorter distances as compare to it used in land as it is economically more advantageous.

High Voltage direct current (HVDC) uses high voltage direct current for electric power transmissions. For underwater current transmission HVDC is less expensive even for shorter distance. HVDC prevent the power loss while underwater cable charges and discharges its capicitance each cycle.

Type of Submarine Power Cable

There are mainly two type of submarine power cable on basis of power transmission.

Alternative Current Cable and Direct Current Cable

Alternative Current Cable (AC)

Submarine power cable are those which carry AC power and transmit it from one source to another source laid under water. This type of cable is used when distance between source and destinationis less.

Direct Current Cable

Submarine Power Cable which carry direct current between its source and destination. These type of cable is used when distance betwen source and destination is much larger. A HVDC is used to transmit power between two station where submarine

What is Submarine Communications Cable ?

What is Submarine Cable?

Submarine Cable is those cables which specially designed to be laid underwater. These types of cables are mainly used for carrying electronic signals, telecommunication, data traffic, Internet data traffic and power.  These cables are the main medium of Internet between all continents in the present world.

Submarine Cable

Why they Called Submarine Cable?

These cables are called "Submarine" because they usually laid under sea or oceans that is salt water. However, these cables can also be used under normal water bodies like river lakes. This is why they called as Submarine Cable.

Type of Submarine Cable

There are basically two types of Submarine Cable.

  1. Submarine Communications Cable
  2. Submarine Power Cable

Submarine Communications Cable

Submarine Communication cable is those cables which are used to carry telecommunication signals and laid under water. These cables laid under sea bed which are maintained by land based stations. These cables use optical fiber technology to carry data communication traffic and Internet and private data traffic.

First submarine communications cable was laid in 1850. Then it was used to carry telegraphy traffic. Then after they start transferring transferring telephonic traffic and then data and communication a traffic and now internet data and private data traffic.

Submarine Power Cable

Submarine Power Cables works the same way as Submarine Communication cable that is under water, but it is used to carry power. Some places have water resources in between them and power station. Cable need to travel through water to deliver power to those places. In this situation Submarine cable comes into the picture. Submarine Cables are easily laid under water can safely transfer power.
